What Your Result Means

DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE ON THE PURPOSE TEST

You scored highest in “you are paid for it”. In fact, you scored so high that in comparison, “you’re great at it”, “the world needs it”, and “you love it” only seem to play minor parts in your current reality. That’s awesome, because you obviously are stably remunerated and clearly valued for what you do.

And just so this is clear, I’m definitely not saying you’re “only in it for the money”. This test is just a snapshot of your right now as perceived by yourself and does not attempt to establish any kind of typology. The fact that the other elements scored so low does suggest, however, that there is an inherent insecurity around your future path and whether

you’d want to continue moving on in the same direction. Or perhaps, you see your current state as a means to an end, a way to fund the life you actually want to live.

Income is a stable place upon which to build a purpose-driven career. You are not concerned with surviving and the current phase may be about directing some energy and dedicating your intention towards thriving, nourishing joy and finding a place where you can have the impact you desire.

Keep reading to see what has held other people back at this stage plus some practical advice for moving forward that I invite you to take with a pinch of salt.

What’s Holding You Back

MEET YOUR BULLSHIT MONSTERS®

No matter which stage you’re at, we all have a little voice in our heads that tries to keep us safe by keeping us un-extraordinary. I lovingly call this self-deprecating chatter “bullshit” and it’s best dealt with by visualising it as coming from a little monster, a bullshit monster!

Catastrophy Caller

People who find themselves in Income tend to meet Catastrophy Caller, the ruler of all things that are likely never going to happen but that keep you awake at night anyway.

The Catastrophy Caller has never been seen by anyone but its effects are widely spread. Some say it has a reptile body and others say it has very long whiskers. What we know for sure is that it hides behind medium-sized rocks and proclaims that something terrible is about to happen in a deep and echoing voice.

It frequently shows up right before you’re about to take an important step in your career or life. It will expertly highlight everything you have to lose, especially when you think you have nothing to lose. Your plane could crash! You may attract the disfavour of the CIA!

Frolic Restrania

You may also have met Frolic Restrania, a well-meaning guardian of let-downs who suppresses all emotions that could maybe end up hurting you. Frolic Restrania stops you from dreaming big or of generating any feelings of excitement or positive anticipation within yourself. Why? Because it wants to save you from disappointment and getting hurt. “In life you can’t have it all. You can’t have your cake and eat it too. The likelihood of having a job that you love, that’s well paid, that you’re great at and that the world needs is very low. You should be happy if you tick even one of those boxes.”

It prefers to paint a bleak picture of your future only to rejoice if it goes better than anticipated. It firmly recommends you take on its so-called humility (code for self-abnegation).

WHAT BRINGS YOU JOY, PERSONALLY AND INDEPENDENTLY OF WHAT EVERYONE ELSE MIGHT WANT FOR YOU?

WHAT MAKES YOU MAD?

WHAT MAKES YOU WANT TO JUMP OFF THE COUCH AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT?

 What to do?

Hurray! Your survival monsters...the nasty little ones, that come in to tell you that you’re unable to be a functioning, independent  grown-up... are taken care of! This means you can dedicate some energy and your power of intention towards figuring out what you really want. There are so many possibilities at this stage!

The only thing I’d caution you about is directing your prime focus at becoming better at something at this stage. Why on earth would I say that? Isn’t becoming better at something always a good idea? Well, my research suggests that you might be influenced by what you think others think you should do, rather than what you truly want. What’s motivated by becoming better may seem like a good idea right now, but I’ve found that in the long run, people stick with things that deeply satisfy them. Rather than following mastery, here’s what to follow instead: Your curiosity or, counterintuitively, your annoyance.

Your curiosity may point you towards things that light you up and bring you joy. There’s gold waiting there for you even if you can’t yet see how to connect the dots! Following your annoyance, on the other hand, sometimes makes just as much sense because it points you towards things you’d like to change, something that makes you angry enough to get your hands dirty.

And now what?
