What Your Result Means

DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE ON THE PURPOSE TEST

Rejoice! Sigh! Wow!

You have landed in the centre of the diagram, right on purpose. Apart from being a statistically rare result, it means you’ve done quite some inner and outer work to give equal importance to all the elements of a purpose-driven career. Perhaps you’re not at a 10/10 level, but you’re well on your way there.

Does this mean you’ve reached enlightenment and won’t or shouldn’t ever change what you’re doing? Nope. It simply means that you’re in balance. And balance isn’t a static place to reach and then have never-

ending sunset picnics in. It’s a state of being grounded and centred while in movement, as though you’re successfully walking a tightrope in a fabulous outfit while winking at the bystanding elephant.

Please know that this test is a mere snapshot of your perceived right now and generally does not attempt to establish any kind of typology.

Keep reading to get a loving and playful look the mental push-back people encounter who are living a purpose-driven career, plus, I’ve drizzled in some practical advice, which I invite you to take with a pinch of salt and a celebratory glass of champagne.

What’s Holding You Back

MEET YOUR BULLSHIT MONSTERS®

No matter which stage you’re at, we all have a little voice in our heads that tries to keep us safe by keeping us un-extraordinary. I lovingly call this self-deprecating chatter “bullshit” and it’s best dealt with by visualising it as coming from a little monster, a bullshit monster!

People who find themselves On Purpose have likely met quite a few Bullshit Monsters® on their way: the Start-Stoppers, Meanies and Awful Helpers who pretend to care about your wellbeing while they stunt your growth. At the balanced stage of purpose we see Analysts more than any other type of bullshit monster. These monsters professionally present you their slanted worldview, thereby forcing you into isolation, stiffness or neediness. Perhaps you’ve met these two?

Bullshit+Monsters+Duke+Merit+by+Anais+Bock

Duke Merit

Duke Merit, for instance, has a regal air that makes the size of your achievements shrivel.

He is not just any old dragon, he’s the 17th dynasty of basilisk excellence and being in his company means something. At least, that’s what he’d like you to believe. He likes visiting people who are having a winning streak and feeds off of your glory by diminishing it. How? He slow-claps at your latest accomplishment, making it feel small and meaningless compared to what could be achieved.

Bullshit Monsters Golden Finch by Anais Bock

Golden Finch

Another example is The Golden Finch, a very fat, bird-like creature that is bad at everything, including flying, but great at giving terrible advice. It loves repeating old rules that you used to believe in. These may relate directly to work “you’re really not a good sales person, don’t go there” or completely unrelated, “you can’t wet your hair in the swimming pool or you’ll get those dreadful curls”. The Golden Flinch’s words are designed to keep you in your golden cage at the expense of your own happiness. You may find that you flinch back from opportunities for growth for no reason at all. On the outside, this may look rather laid back and relaxed, while actually, you’re not stepping up to take responsibility for what you desire.

WHERE DO I WANT TO GO NEXT?

WHAT OLD RULES DO I WANT TO THROW OUT IN ORDER TO EXPERIENCE MORE OF WHAT I LIKE FEELING?

HOW CAN I BE OF SERVICE TO OTHERS?

What to do?

Well, it really is up to you. The fact that you got this result shows that you have both dreaming and doing down, exhibit a good portion of self-efficacy (that’s a very smart term used to express you believe you can do things) and have created a set-up in which you can perceive that impact (when you do things, overall things change for the better).

Your dreams are the limit… where do you want to go next? What old rules do you want to throw out in order to experience more cheeky joy and open-hearted impact?

If, while reading this result you feel that something is off, feel free to take it again and, this time, dare to have an opinion while scoring (rather than staying in the safe mid range)... You may receive just the answer you need.

And now what?

Here’s a sneak peek of what you’ll be getting

  • Why asking yourself “what’s my purpose?” is one of the most useless ways of going about working with purpose (even if you really want to know)

  • What to do instead

  • How to deal with Bullshit Monsters® when you meet them out in the wild (procrastination, fear of ridicule, perfectionism - I’ve got you covered!)
