What Your Result Means
DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU ARE ON THE PURPOSE TEST
You are currently at the interface of “you love it” and “you’re great at it”, which suggests that you are actively invested in your thing and it is likely that you want to walk-dance further in this direction. I called this place on the diagram “play” not because it’s not to be taken seriously, but because your work probably comes very easily to you. Since the spheres that you scored significantly lower on are the more worldly, structured ones, traditionally associated with “useful work”, it may at times feel as though you should come back from your trip to Neverland, grow up and learn to make some “real money”.
Know this: Play is much easier to build logical structures around, than it is to breathe life into an empty, money-making machine. On the following pages you’ll get a delightful look at what has held other people back at this stage (think Bullshit Monsters®!) and I’ll also give you some practical advice for moving forward.
Please remember that this test is just a snapshot of your right now and does not attempt to establish any kind of typology. I invite you to read on with a playful, open mindset. I’m guessing that won’t be hard for you!
What’s Holding You Back
MEET YOUR BULLSHIT MONSTERS®
No matter which stage you’re at, we all have a little voice in our heads that tries to keep us safe by keeping us un-extraordinary. I lovingly call this self-deprecating chatter “bullshit” and it’s best dealt with by visualising it as coming from a little monster, a bullshit monster!
Yell Ow
People who find themselves in Play frequently meet party-pooper monsters, especially when they are looking to turn Play into a mission or something to make money with. Yell Ow for instance, an uncomfortable little fellow who tried very hard to motivate you (he’s only good at the “hard” part).
Yell Ow is made of mineral deposits and it comes as no surprise that he’s the father of bladder stones. He firmly believes in hardship as the only way to succeed and recites phrases like “work is hard” or “you won’t get something from nothing” or his personal favourite “work hard, play hard”. He’s frequently misunderstood for not being enjoyable, which isn’t quite true, for he loves a good party. But in the work context, if it’s not hard, you’re not to be taken seriously.
Book, the Worm
Similarly, you may have made Book, the Worm’s acquaintance. He’s an overqualified bully who secretly collects other people’s diplomas.
His stodgy body snakes itself around piles of dusty manuscripts and instruments of unidentifiable use. He wears glasses (without a nose?) and peers at you resolutely, informing you that unfortunately you don’t qualify for dream manifestation. “You simply don’t know enough, haven’t read enough and would need to attend at least another (impossibly expensive) course for minimum certification!” His aim? To make you feel worthless and ready to drop it all. He undermines you by placing his focus on your lack of intelligence.
What to do?
It’s easy to discount yourself and what you’ve done so far as “non-businessy” but if there’s one thing I want you to take home, it’s this: take your play a little more seriously (and by seriously I mean lightly, laughingly and meaningfully). Don’t underestimate its significance! Many people never find a winning combination they love and are great at, so you’ve mastered an important connection there.
The next step on the road to purpose is to think unconventionally and leave the either serious-and-successful or playful-and-just-a-hobby box that your monsters so fervently want you to stay in. You can remain on your playground and utilise your creative energy to dream.
